The Era of Emotions, Not the Era of AI
Everyone around me calls this the era of AI. I disagree.
I am a loud advocate of AI. My team and I are deep in agentic AI, robotics, automation, image generation, and content generation. But my thesis is simple.
"AI without human emotion is not going to work."
The craft was never the tool. The craft was always making a human feel something. The camera did not kill the painter. Digital did not kill analog. Mirrorless did not kill the DSLR. And AI will not kill the storyteller. It will only reveal who was never one.
Humans Prefer Imperfection. Always Have.
Open any phone today. Half the camera apps are built to take a crisp digital image and make it look like old film. Grain added, colors faded, a scratch for authenticity.
Think about that for a second. We built the perfect camera, then paid to make its images look imperfect again.
Why?
Humans live imperfect lives. They relate to imperfect things.
Humans love imperfect people. They marry them, raise them, work with them.
Humans trust imperfect brands. Over-polished ones feel like a lie.
The more synthetic the world becomes, the more valuable the real feels.
History is About to Repeat.
I lived this cycle once already as a photographer and a brand builder.
In 2004, Photoshop arrived. Everyone wanted the perfect image. Skinny models, retouched skin, glossy campaigns. By 2013, audiences were done. By 2016, the global advertising world shifted to real people, real voices, real stories. Micro-influencers were born. Then COVID hit, and authenticity became the only currency that mattered.
Now watch what is happening with AI.
2023. Everyone was wowed by generative images.
2025. Even children spot an AI image in a second.
2027 onwards. Audiences will reject brands that hide behind synthetic content.
The cycle this time will not take twelve years. It will take two.
The Emotional Evolution Problem.
Here is what AI cannot do, and will not do for years. A husband and wife evolve emotionally every single day. Parents and children, every hour. A boss and employee shift mood between morning and lunch.
That emotional drift is the real raw material of a brand. Consumers are humans. Their state changes constantly.
Three things AI cannot track:
Daily emotional context of the person on the other side.
The weight of silence before a decision.
The reason someone chooses one brand over another when the price and feature are identical.
AI runs at the speed of computation. Brands must run at the speed of human emotional evolution.
The Business Reality.
Pure AI customer service solves the problem. It also kills the heart-to-heart connection that drives retention. The customer gets the answer. The brand loses the memory.
The right answer is not AI or human. It is AI used to amplify human. Two people on the back-end doing the work of ten, through warm, human-centered systems. Not two people hidden behind a cold machine.
Build systems that help humans show up as humans. Then AI becomes an unfair advantage, not a replacement.
The brands that will quietly disappear in the next three years are the ones treating AI as the storyteller. The ones that will scale are the ones treating AI as the fastest way yet to deliver human emotion.
Stop asking how to use AI.
Start asking what emotion you are creating.
Welcome to the era of emotions.
A longer version of this thinking is coming as an e-book: "The Era of Emotions — 2027 and Onwards." The book will cover emotion in marketing, branding, advertising, process automation, customer services, visual communication, content marketing, and business automation.
